Tiny Abolitionist Film Festival in John Brown’s Hometown

Two documentary films, two historians, two filmmakers, and two hours of edification!

We will screen and discuss Songs of Slavery and Emancipation and His Truth Is Marching On in John Brown’s hometown (Torrington, CT) on June 13, 2023, at 8:00.

The films explore abolition, equality, music, and American history. The event will include speakers on Torrington’s abolitionist history, live music, and dance.

Filmmaker, Mat Callahan, will be en-route from Boston to Upstate NY on a screening tour for his film and has agreed to stop in Torrington fir a tiny pit stop. Callahan recently completed a book, film, and CD collection, Songs of Slavery and Emancipation, working with the University of Mississippi Press and Jalopy Records in New York City.

In addition to the two films, we’ll also feature two famous historians, Mark McEachern, Executive Director of the Torrington Historical Society, and Dr. Manisha Sinha, the Chair in American History at the University of Connecticut and a leading authority on the history of slavery, abolition, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. Dr. Sinha also appears in the film, Songs of Slavery and Emancipation.

A special VIP event preceding the festival will take place at the Torrington Historical Society with wine, appetizers, speakers, and networking opportunities.
